Some of my observations, learning experiences, on writing a blog probably come as no surprise to most of you.
There is no doubt that everyone has there own opinions about a wide range of topics, and when perusing blogs they tend to gravitate toward blog authors who share most of those opinions, or at least the principal ones.
The Kyron Horman investigation is a good example. The responses I received from readers were generally from two camps – those that agreed with or supported my views, and those that believed I didn’t know my ass from first base – and clearly didn’t plan to be stopping back any time soon.
Writing a blog can be fun. I enjoy the interaction with different people, and the exchange of ideas. I realize that a successful blog has to be somewhat edgy. Nonetheless, I do not enjoy making people angry. That is not my nature. There were times when I’ve wondered, ‘Why in the heck are you even doing this’? And, I never did arrive at a truly satisfactory answer to that question.
The other consideration is the monetary cost – is it worth it? I thought about running ads, as many do. But, I’ve never done that for two reasons; one reason is I don’t believe those ads derive much return; and two they seem almost embarrassingly mercenary. Furthermore, I never felt that I could write an opinion piece, on a consistent basis, which was so interesting readers would still put up with non-relevant advertisements.
So, what’s all this about? Well, I plan to continue with this blog with its opportunity to answer questions and comments on current events. However, I additionally plan to start a second blog that I’m hoping some of you will enjoy – and will even participate.
The new blog is to be titled TRUE Stories by True Nelson. It will have a law enforcement, investigations’ theme; and will focus on an endeavor that I much enjoy – writing. I’ve written a number of short stories, a couple of which have been published. However, as would-be writers soon discover getting a short story published is hardly worth the bother. It takes considerable effort and the eventual remuneration is usually in the area of a few hundred dollars. Quite frankly, there is little market for short stories, unless you are a well known author – aka novelist. I plan to exhibit some of my own writing on this blog; and I hope readers will find that interesting, entertaining, and willing to return for more.
Additionally, I would like other authors to submit theme related stories they’ve written to be featured on my blog. I’m not in a position to pay for stories, essays, or other literary or artistic efforts, but it could garner you some potentially worldwide exposure; and you retain the copyright. I do know that producers of potential television and motion picture projects occasionally peruse these sites looking for ideas, story lines, and quality writers. It may be a way of being discovered.
I know some of you might have wonderful stories in mind, or already written. I am looking for stories (fiction or nonfiction) in keeping with the blog’s theme of ‘Crime, Investigations, and Mystery.’
For any of you who might have comments on this proposed project, please do.
I’m still coordinating some final work on the described blog. I hope to have it up and running by the end of the month or the first part of November. I will keep you posted.
